Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery
Dr. Maessen studied Medicine at the University of Maastricht where he graduated in 1984. He joined the department of General Surgery where he obtained his PhD in 1988 entitled: “Evaluation of ischemic injury in donor kidneys” supervised by Prof Gauke Kootstra. His cardiopulmonary surgery training took place in Maastricht from 1988 to 1994 under the supervision of Prof Olaf Penn. Since then, he is a staff member of the department of cardiothoracic surgery. In 2004 he became chair of the department of cardiothoracic surgery at the University Hospital Maastricht. In April 2005 he was appointed Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Maastricht University. His clinical interests are minimal invasive and hybrid cardiothoracic surgery. His research activities are based on cardiac engineering with a large PhD program accommodating both physicians and engineers.
